Community Collaboration Efforts by the Community Collaboration Team
Dr. Hiroshi Tomoda (Kitasato University)
The primary aim of this team is to extend the consortium’s circle of connections in the local area, to corporations and to research organizations, based on the strengths that each of the four universities demonstrates in education and research, to build a base for collaboration with the community. We have been holding a series of civic lectures as part of our community outreach activities in cooperation with the local government, and offering a course of study primarily for people working in companies, in connection to community collaboration. Additional activities are being planned for the future.
1. Civic Lectures
The four universities jointly host civic lectures and the like for the general public twice a year in collaboration with their respective local governing bodies. These talks fall under the category of lifelong learning, an effort being promoted by local governments, and gives citizens the chance to learn about leading research in the life sciences through the presentation of results from different research areas in which the four universities are engaged. It is also an excellent opportunity for the universities to hear opinions from the general public, and can be a stepping stone for participating graduate students to discover new issues.
2. Continuing Education
A course has been set up that is designed to cultivate skills in evaluating intellectual property in the field of life science. It is aimed primarily at people employed by cutting-edge biotech companies working to develop businesses based on patents and other intellectual property. Undergraduates and graduate school students, who may also join this course, are provided with opportunities to discuss common issues with people from the working world and listen to different perspectives. The lectures are given by professors from the four universities, each working at the forefront of his or her field, presenting the latest findings, and by patent attorneys and lawyers current active at the forefront of global business. To accommodate the participation of working people, the classes are held on weekday evenings, and the course term is just over two months.
